Start with what you already like
You already know a lot about yourself. This page helps you say it out loud so it can turn into class choices. Grab paper or your notes app and make two lists: Like and Dislike. No wrong answers.
Six questions to fill your lists
When does time go fast for you?
The class or activity where you forget to check the clock is a real clue.
What do you do when nobody makes you?
Hobbies count. Cars, animals, drawing, gaming, cooking, sports, music.
What part of school do you dread?
Dislikes matter just as much. They keep you out of the wrong pathway.
Do you like being with people or being on your own?
Some jobs are all people, all day. Others are quiet and focused.
Inside or outside?
This one question rules a lot of careers in or out fast.
Do you like to finish one thing or juggle many?
Some work is one long project. Some work changes every hour.
Turn a like into a class
Find the row that sounds most like your list, then look for those classes in the catalog.
- Hands and tools
- Ag mechanics, welding, construction, auto
- People and care
- Health science, child development, psychology
- Numbers and systems
- Algebra II, accounting, computer science
- Making and performing
- Art, band, choir, theater, media
- Animals and land
- Animal science, plant science, natural resources
- Words and arguing well
- Speech, debate, government, journalism
What to do about a dislike
A dislike is not a dead end. Usually it means you need a different setting, not a different future.
“I hate reading long chapters.”
Choose classes with labs, shops or studios. Ask about audiobooks — that is allowed.
“I freeze during presentations.”
Take speech early with a small group. It gets easier, and it's required in a lot of jobs.
“Math makes me nervous.”
Keep taking it, but ask for the support section. Skipping a year is what hurts later.
“Sitting still is hard.”
Balance every quiet class with a moving one — PE, shop, ag, theater, band.
